Karma for chamber orchestra and stereo tape was written in Jackson, Mississippi for the Jackson State College Orchestra. The sounds on the tape are modifications of recording made during rehearsals of the Jackson State College Orchestra. The first performance was at Jackson State College and featured an alto saxophone as the solo instrument. The second performance was with the Grinnell College Orchestra under the direction of Paul Zonn. At that performance, an electric guitar was the featured solo instrument. The score of the composition is graphic and allows for improvisation of individual performers producing sounds in conventional and unconventional ways with their instruments. The composition divides the sound spectrum of the orchestra into groups of instruments, concluding the single movement with the double basses playing softly and finally ending with only electronic sounds.
