Performance Instructions

Program Notes:

Contact for alto saxophone and electronics was the second piece written for and requested by AthanasiosZervas. The first piece, Smoking Mirrors is for alto saxophone and piano and was premiered in Athens, Greece by Dr. Zervas. Contact was written during the spring/summer of 2001 in Budapest, Hungary and Wilmette, Illinois, USA. The twelve-tone row used for serializing both the saxophone score and electronics contains only one minor 2nd. However, this is an important interval used throughout the composition. Pitches, durations, timbre, and dynamics are determined by the row. A method of extending one transposition of the series to other permutations was first explored in this composition. Two legendary jazz performers, John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk, influenced the composition in regard to rhythmic patterns and motivic ideas that are used in both the electronics and saxophone. The electronics are manipulated recorded sounds (roof being replaced, jazz drummers, crickets) and analog sounds created on synthesizers.
